As Aaron is beginning the second year of his HNC in Construction and The Built Environment, we caught up with him to ask about his first year with UKWS.
Tell us about working at UKWS?
I am now mainly working in the office; the collective atmosphere is great. Whenever you have a query or need a hand somebody is willing to point you in the right direction, which is great for my progression. Everyone surrounding me has experience carrying out varied tasks and are always on hand to help, should I need it. My site experience has also been great and the sub-contractors we work with are always helpful should any issues arise.
What have you found most interesting in your first year?
Watching a project grow from nothing on site to a complete build is very rewarding but also presents multiple challenges which need to be addressed throughout the process. Overcoming problems on site and knowing your solution works is a great feeling. Relating drawings to the build is very interesting to me and has helped with my understanding of details.
What have you been doing with your time during furlough?
Throughout furlough I made sure that the garden was well cut, along with a variety of other jobs which needed finishing off outside like jet washing the drive and painting our fences. I also finished my first year of my Level 4 HNC in Construction in the built environment to ensure my learning wasn’t stunted and I was ready for my second year. I returned to work in May where I managed our subcontractors at Trentham Lakes, an industrial project we have carried out for A&H Construction. There were three units running simultaneously so there were constantly various things which needed checking up on and sorting, so I was definitely kept busy once I had retuned.
What is next in your career with UKWS?
My career path has evolved since I started as an Apprentice Site Manager with UKWS over a year ago. I am now starting my training as a buyer and assisting the operation and contracts teams, my responsibilities are growing daily, and I am enjoying learning a wide range of skills through different aspects of the business. Overall, I’ve greatly enjoyed my experience as an Apprentice at UKWS so far and I am looking forward to what the future holds.
Any advice for people wanting to join UKWS?
For anyone thinking about a career at UKWS, I would not hesitate at all to get involved, everybody is very friendly. Creating a great environment to work in, both in the office and on site.
